Freezer Storage Guide

Search any food to get recommended freezer times, thawing methods, and refreezing rules.

Freezer Storage Tips

Keep it at 0°F (-18°C). Food stored at a constant 0°F is safe indefinitely, but quality degrades over time. The times listed are for best quality, not safety.
Remove air before sealing. Air causes freezer burn. Use freezer bags and squeeze out excess air, or wrap tightly in freezer-grade plastic wrap and foil.
Label everything. Write the food name and date frozen on each package. You will not remember what it is or when you froze it.
Cool before freezing. Let hot foods cool to room temperature before putting them in the freezer. Hot food raises the freezer temperature and can partially thaw nearby items.
Freeze in portions. Freeze in meal-sized portions so you only thaw what you need. Flat packages freeze and thaw faster than thick blocks.
